Education Partnership

The Locker of Memory project in Riga and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna

A partnership between the Institute of Landscape Architecture, Department of Landscape, Spatial and Infrastructure Sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and the Locker of Memory memorial project, was established in 2020. Project director Karen Frostig worked with faculty Ulrike Krippner and Julia Backhausen-Nikolic to develop an educational seminar that would stimulate new approaches to landscape architecture for Holocaust camps and memorials. The educational seminar began in April 2021.

Departing from the prevailing minimalist presentation of deprivation and loss to an alternative display of nurture and comfort, Director Karen Frostig challenged students to develop a new language for a memorial landscape at the Jungfernhof concentration camp, situated in the midst of a bucolic recreation park. Students would be tasked to address the unimaginable scale of cruelty and horror that existed at the site between 1941-1943. Students were invited to explore how the cultivation of land and use of space could be developed to symbolically reference ideas about forced labor, brutality and oppression, in relation to hidden pockets of humanity.
